On January 27, 1986, the College became the West Visayas State University, [10] integrating the Iloilo National College of Agriculture (INCA) into its system. In 1987, the University acquired the Don Benito V. Lopez Memorial Hospital which became the WVSU Hospital, a 150-bed tertiary, teaching and training hospital.
Also found in UPV Iloilo campus is the University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo. In 2022, the UP College of Law in Manila opened a law extension program on the Iloilo City campus. In May 2022, The UPV Graduate Program Office (UPV-GPO) has been elevated to the UPV Graduate School (GS) by the UP Board of Regents (BOR).
The school was granted university status on 1 March 1953, a year before its 50th anniversary, making it the first university in Western Visayas. The following year, the Rev. Angel Dulanto, OSA arrived from Spain after completing his studies at Villanova University, an American sister school of San Agustin.
