LVDS operates at low power and can run at very high speeds using inexpensive twisted-pair copper cables. LVDS is a physical layer specification only; many data communication standards and applications use it and add a data link layer as defined in the OSI model on top of it.
LVDS, defined by the ANSI/TIA/EIA-644-A standard, is a differential signaling system that can run at high speed. LVDS works in serial data transmission. As the main applications had 18 bits color depth in early adoption of FPD-Link, a 7-bit wide differential cable pair for each of 3 channels with another channel for clock became used.
Basic LVDS circuit. FPD-Link was the first large-scale application of the low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) standard. National Semiconductor immediately provided interoperability specifications for the FPD-Link technology in order to promote it as a free and open standard, and thus other IC suppliers were able to copy it.
Longer cable runs are possible due to this increased noise immunity and 6 dB extra headroom. At higher frequencies, the output impedance of the output amplifier can change, resulting in a small imbalance. When driven in differential mode by two identical amplifiers, this impedance change will be the same for both lines, and thus cancelled out. [1]
An attempt by Apple to deal with cable clutter, by combining five separate cables from computer to monitor. Female port (20-pin) Digital Flat Panel (DFP) Used with the PanelLink digital video protocol. Deprecated. Made obsolete by DVI. 3D model of a UDI connector Unified Display Interface: Proposed to replace both DVI and HDMI.
