"If You Asked Me To" is a song written by American songwriter Diane Warren and produced by Stewart Levine and Aaron Zigman. It was originally recorded by American singer Patti LaBelle for her ninth studio album , Be Yourself (1989), and also for the soundtrack to the James Bond film Licence to Kill .
The initial working title of the song, Smog Check, was due to the day of its recording coinciding with a car mechanic appointment with guitarist Brian Welch. [1]The official visualizer, released on YouTube the day after its release, [2] features a hanging, pulsating anthropomorphic structure composed of black wires, [3] which also features on the album's artwork.
The single version of the song did not receive an album release until the compilation Foundations of Funk – A Brand New Bag, but a live recording was included on Brown's 1970 album Sex Machine. The track was sampled by Ice-T in his song "Power" and also sampled by Ed O.G. and Da Bulldogs in their song "I Got To Have It".
