Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain is a privately owned resort and spa located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The resort, which opened in 2001, is located on 53 acres on the north face of Camelback Mountain. [1] It has 105 mountain and spa casitas as well as a collection of private homes. [2]
Bill Marriott had first stayed at the resort with his parents as a 16-year-old in 1948. At the time of Marriott's purchase, Camelback Inn was still a seasonal winter resort with 170 rooms and no air conditioning. [6] In March 2003, the hotel was officially rebranded by its parent corporation as Camelback Inn, a JW Marriott Resort & Spa. [7]
The resort opened for business on October 1, 1988, [7] The hotel initially had 604 rooms, 132 casitas, a VIP suite and a presidential suite. The dome in the hotel's lobby was covered with 24 karat gold, and the cactus garden, which contained over 250 varieties of cacti, was the second largest in the state when it was completed. [5]
In 1998, he was hired as the Executive Chef at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain (formerly known as The Ranch on Camelback). In March 2001, MacMillan and former Executive Chef Charles Wiley opened the restaurant elements. In 2023 Beau MacMillan and Scott Conant opened up CALA in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Gold Room. Clark Gable and friends used to dine in the Gold Room. The 7,000 square foot ballroom could accommodate 480 guests. The Gold Room, with the gold leaf ceiling, was the original dining room of the Biltmore. It featured dancing and a live orchestra every night. The gold leaf ceiling and windows are from the original structure.

The Mummy Mountain Preserve Trust is a 501 (c)(3) charitable trust established in 1997 to preserve the natural landscape of approximately 320 acres (1.3 km 2) along the mountain ridge. Local celebrities including Marshall Trimble , Joe Garagiola , Clive Cussler and Bil Keane supported a campaign asking property owners for donations of land.
