This is a list of American Civil War units, consisting of those established as federally organized units as well as units raised by individual states and territories. Many states had soldiers and units fighting for both the United States ( Union Army ) and the Confederate States ( Confederate States Army ).

The film Best of the Badmen (1951) is a fictional account of the remnants of Quantrill's Raiders in the western frontier after they had surrendered to Union forces.
At the start of the war, the entire United States Army consisted of 16,367 men of all branches, with infantry representing the vast majority of this total.
