A. titanum is endemic to rainforests on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Because its flower blooms infrequently and only for a short period, it gives off a powerful scent of rotting flesh to attract pollinators. One exceptional species is known as Rafflesia arnoldi, named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and Dr. Thomas Arnold, who discovered the flower in the depths of Bengkulu, southwest Sumatra.
