Chi Omega's first series chapters (single-letter) are named for 24 of the Greek letters and assigned in an order customized to Chi Omega, approximating a reverse alphabetical order. The Omega chapter is reserved as a memorial designation; subsequent chapters have likewise not been assigned using the letter Omega in their names.

Phi Delta was created from the combination of two local sororities: Sigma Epsilon (New York University, 1919) and Alpha Delta Omicron (New York State Teachers College at Albany). These two groups came together to form Phi Delta on 19 January 1927. (October 25, 1919, the founding date of the eldest unit was celebrated as the official founding date).
In 1902, Alpha Phi invited Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Chi Omega, and Chi Omega to a conference in Chicago on May 24 to set standards for collegiate sororities. Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Omega were unable to attend and joined the following year.

It was established on December 30, 1925 by six organizations, including Alpha Omega Alpha , the Order of the Coif , Phi Beta Kappa , Phi Kappa Phi , Sigma Xi , and Tau Beta Pi .
It was known as the Seventh (VII) Section. Dormant Omega Alpha Tau (1976-1995) can also claim roots in Sigma Chi and the Seventh (VII) Section, having split from Kappa Chi. [18] Three of today's campus sororities can claim their provenance in the earlier chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
