Tulare County (/ t ʊ ˈ l ɛər i / ⓘ tuu-LAIR-ee) is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 473,117. [4] The county seat is Visalia. [6] The county is named for Tulare Lake, once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes.
It was originally named the Tulare County Record and Fresno Examiner, and was founded June 25, 1859 by I. W. Carpenter, a printer. [1]In 1948, the Times-Delta was purchased by Speidel Newspapers. [2]

In the early 1890s, the Dalton Gang was accused and convicted of robbing a Southern Pacific Railroad train at Earlimart, when the community was known as Alila. [2]Community members changed its name to Earlimart in 1910, choosing that name because the variety of melons grown by local farmers ripened early, and thus were considered “early to market”—hence, “Earli-mart.”
