The book documents the history of female homesteaders on the Canadian Prairies and the relationship between that history and Canadian colonialism.

Bryant was born on November 3, 1794, [1] in a log cabin near Cummington, Massachusetts; this home of his birth is commemorated with a plaque. [2] He was the second son of Peter Bryant (August 12, 1767 – March 20, 1820), a physician and later a state legislator, and Sarah Snell (December 4, 1768 – May 6, 1847).
Bryant wrote the poem in July 1815. [3] He was inspired after walking from Cummington to Plainfield to look for a place to settle as a lawyer. The duck, flying across the sunset, seemed to Bryant as solitary a soul as himself, and he wrote the poem that evening.
