The Illinois State Fairgrounds is located in Springfield, Illinois. [1] It hosts the annual Illinois State Fair in the summer as well as other events throughout the year. The fairgrounds encompasses 366 acres of land and was added as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. [ 2 ]
From 1960 to 1970, the site consisted of seven waste disposal lagoons and open storage of 10,000 to 15,000 drums. Testing of groundwater found it to contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Soil sampling identified VOCs, phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and metals including lead and chromium.

In 1974, the DuPage County Forest Preserve District established a solid waste landfill west of the lake. [1] The landfill began operation March 4, 1975 and the last load of waste arrived March 13, 1999. The landfill occupies 230 acres (0.9 km 2) and rises to 982 feet (299.3 m) MSL making it the highest point in DuPage County. [2]
