Messier 63 or M63, also known as NGC 5055 or the seldom-used Sunflower Galaxy, [6] is a spiral galaxy in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici with approximately 400 billion stars. [7] M63 was first discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain , then later verified by his colleague Charles Messier on 14 June 1779. [ 6 ]
This illustrates the fact that there are far more faint stars than bright stars: in the entire sky, there are about 500 stars brighter than apparent magnitude 4 but 15.5 million stars brighter than apparent magnitude 14. [108] The apex of the Sun's way, or the solar apex, is the direction that the Sun travels through space in the Milky Way.
The following is a list of stars with resolved images, that is, stars whose images have been resolved beyond a point source. Aside from the Sun , observed from Earth , stars are exceedingly small in apparent size, requiring the use of special high-resolution equipment and techniques to image.
Vega has been extensively studied by astronomers, leading it to be termed "arguably the next most important star in the sky after the Sun". [18] Vega was the northern pole star around 12,000 BCE and will be so again around the year 13,727, when its declination will be +86° 14′. [ 19 ]
The most powerful telescope to be launched into space has made history by detecting a record number of new stars in a distant galaxy. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, history's largest and most ...
Many star systems in Cygnus have known planets as a result of the Kepler Mission observing one patch of the sky, an area around Cygnus. Most of the east has part of the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall in the deep sky , a giant galaxy filament that is the largest known structure in the observable universe, covering most of the northern sky.
An accurate determination of the distance to the Galactic Center as established from variable stars (e.g. RR Lyrae variables) or standard candles (e.g. red-clump stars) is hindered by numerous effects, which include: an ambiguous reddening law; a bias for smaller values of the distance to the Galactic Center because of a preferential sampling ...
NGC 4038 was a barred spiral galaxy and NGC 4039 was a spiral galaxy. 900 million years ago, the Antennae began to approach one another, looking similar to NGC 2207 and IC 2163. 600 million years ago, the Antennae passed through each other, looking like the Mice Galaxies. 300 million years ago, the Antennae's stars began to be released from ...
