Portadown forms part of the Upper Bann constituencies for the Northern Ireland Assembly and UK Parliament. It was created for the 1985 local elections , mainly replacing Craigavon Area B which had existed since 1973, where it originally contained seven wards (Annagh, Ballybay, Ballyoran, Brownstown, Corcrain, Tavanagh and The Birches).

The area was advanced to the status of urban district in 1899 [5] and to municipal borough with the town hall as its headquarters in July 1947.
