The engine's prototypes (referred to as AJP-6) were designed and delivered by independent engineer Al Melling (the "A" in AJP) as both 3.0 and 3.5 litre units. The Ford small-block is a series of 90° overhead valve small-block V8 automobile engines manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from July 1961 to December 2000. Designed as a successor to the Ford Y-block engine , it was first installed in the 1962 model year Ford Fairlane and Mercury Meteor .
The engine series are all four-cylinder four-stroke, horizontally-opposed, air-cooled, Volkswagen automotive conversion gasoline engines, with direct-drive. They employ magneto ignition systems and, depending on the model, produce 55 to 80 hp (41 to 60 kW) at 3600 rpm, with a compression ratio of 8.0:1. They use a geared electric starter.
This block is one of three displacements, 302/327/350, that underwent a crankshaft bearing diameter transformation for 1968 when the rod-journal size was increased from the 2 in (50.8 mm) diameter small-journal to a 2.1 in (53.3 mm) large-journal and a main-journal size that was increased from 2.3 in (58.4 mm) to 2.45 in (62.2 mm).
