Washington Island is Wisconsin's largest in Lake Michigan and also has a year-round population of 708 as of the 2010 census. Hog Island covers 2 acres (8,100 m 2) of land, Plum Island 325 acres (1.32 km 2), and Pilot Island approximately 3.7 acres (15,000 m 2). The islands are part of the Niagara Escarpment as opposed to the Black River or Magnesian escarpments. The underlying bedrock is dolomite. [1] The area was sculpted by glaciers.
Plum Island and Pilot Island both have lighthouse facilities (the Plum Island Range Lights and the Pilot Island Light, both on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places), and have had minor U.S. Coast Guard presence, even as late as 2007. [2] However, Spider, Hog, and Gravel Islands have always remained uninhabited in the post-settlement era.
