The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a horse racing track in Mahalaxmi neighbourhood of Mumbai. The track is oval shaped with 2,400 metres (7,900 ft) straight chute, spread over approximately 225 acres (0.91 km 2; 0.352 sq mi) of open land in the heart of Mumbai city. It was created out of a marshy land known as Mahalakshmi Flats.
The race course was established in 1777 and the club was formed in 1837, making it is the oldest horse racing Club in South Asia. Delhi Turf Club, established in 1940, conducts racing at India's capital Delhi usually once a week from August until May, where racing is run under the aegis of RWITC.
The course occupies over 55 acres in the centre of Ooty. The course is about 2.4 km long. The main event of the racing season is "The Nilgiri Gold Cup Race". To commemorate 125 years of racing in this hill station, a special race for "The Post Centenary Silver Jubilee Cup" was run in 2011, [1] and creating a garden is under discussion.
