The Tax Collector collects all ad valorem taxes levied in Polk County. The Tax Collector also collects non-ad valorem assessments, which are also made by taxing authorities on real property to provide essential services, such as fire protection, garbage collection, lighting, etc.

Joe G. Tedder was first elected to the position of Tax Collector in 1996. He was originally administered the oath of office to serve as Tax Collector for Polk County, Florida on January 7th, 1997. He was subsequently reelected to the position of Tax Collector in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024.
If you have purchased an automobile (new or used) from a Florida dealership, the dealer is required by law to process the application for title. If a new automobile was purchased from an out-of-state dealership, an application for title may be processed by mail or at a Tax Collector’s Service Center or an approved Tag Agency.
Generally, residents are required to have current Florida registrations and titles for their motor vehicles. As a courtesy, the Tax Collector’s Office mails renewal notices to resident vehicle owners. The courtesy renewal notices are no less than 3 weeks prior to the vehicle owner’s birth month (or month in which the renewal is due). The renewal notice includes materials which allow vehicle owners to more easily renew their registration(s) by mail.
