Pakistani surnames are divided into three categories: Islamic naming convention, cultural names and ancestral names. In Pakistan a person is either referred by his or her Islamic name or from tribe name (if it is specified), respectively.
Such names are roughly equivalent to the English or Welsh surnames Richardson or Richards. The Russian equivalent of 'Smith', 'Jones', and 'Brown' (that is, the generic most often used surnames) are Ivanov, Petrov, Sidorov , or 'Johns', 'Peters', and ' Isidores ', although Sidorov is now ranked only 66th.
Officially, among Japanese names there are 291,129 different Japanese surnames (姓, sei), [1] as determined by their kanji, although many of these are pronounced and romanized similarly. Conversely, some surnames written the same in kanji may also be pronounced differently. [2]
Ancient clan names are still prominent today, if altered somewhat, due to those ties with ancestry and history. As you'll see, there are many variations of Japanese last names with similar meanings.
There are several titles used in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. Syed, Shaikh, Khawaja, Pasha, Malik etc. are common. Less commonly, the tribal name itself is appended to the person's given names. For females, tribal names or titles rarely figure in the person's full name although it has become more common due to Western influence.
