State Route 63 (SR 63) was a 136.64-mile (220-kilometre) long state highway in northeastern Arizona servicing the Navajo Nation. [10] SR 63 was designated on January 10, 1961, along a route from U.S. Route 66 (US 66) in Chambers to the reservation boundary of the Navajo Nation. [ 11 ]
The Arizona State Highway system was introduced on September 9, 1927, by the State Highway Commission (formed on August 11 of the same year). It incorporated the new federal aid system and also the U.S. Highway system. The 1927 plan included 27 state routes, most of which were simply dirt roads.
The historic U.S.Highway 80 passes through Buckeye. The roots of the U.S. 80 date back to the late 1846 and was one of the first roads that went through the Arizona Territory. The road began in Yuma and followed the Gila River to Buckeye and so on. The highway has been known by various names including the Bankhead Highway and the Old Spanish Trail.
In 1973, the connector between I-10 and Buckeye Road was established, and was redesignated in 1978 as a spur route of SR 85. [13] As the old, indirect US 80 was removed from Arizona, SR 85 was extended north in 1977 over the old alignment of US 80 to Buckeye and extended east to Phoenix. [14]
