Murray is a suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. [2] It is not a conventional suburb, with the developed land in the suburb being within the Australian Army's Lavarack Barracks. In the 2021 census, Murray had a population of 1,739 people. [1]
[2] [3] It was the first major Regular Army unit to be raised in Queensland. [4] The regiment moved to Lavarack Barracks in 1968. [4] As a complete unit, the regiment served two tours of duty in South Vietnam, as well as sending individual batteries to South Vietnam, Singapore, Malaya and East Timor. [4]
Commencing in 2014, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment began re-locating to Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, Queensland to become the armoured component of the 3rd Brigade. [10] On 31 October, the regiment farewelled Darwin, [7] and on 28 November 2014 it conducted a parade in Townsville to mark its transfer to the 3rd Brigade. [11]
