Evangelos "Vangelis" Marinakis (Ευάγγελος (Βαγγέλης) Μαρινάκης), born 30 July 1967) is a Greek businessman and investor, the principal shareholder of a number of companies operating in the shipping, media and football sectors. Marinakis is the son of shipowner and politician Miltiadis Marinakis from Crete.
Evangelos Marinakis has said that one of the reasons the monument was such an important project for him to contribute to, is because his mother, Irene Karakatsani, is a descendant of the Ypsilantis family, whose ancestors played a central role in the Greek War of Independence.
