The construction of the palace was started in 1551 by Maharana Amar Singh, continued by Maharana Karan Singh (1620–1628) and finally completed by Maharana Jagat Singh I (1628–1652). It is named as "Jagat Mandir" in honour of the last named Maharana Jagat Singh.
The 3 levels of the palace are arranged in a semicircular arc around an internal courtyard in the middle of which is a marble pool. [2] Balconies and rooftop terraces opening off different rooms enjoy views to the south of the gardens laid below the dam wall of Lake Pichola; while to the west, the island resorts of Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace.
Udaipur was once surrounded by the city wall of Udaipur, called in Hindi Parkota. Udiapol Darvaza or Udiapol is one entry gate among seven. It is a central point for many adjoining markets, including Patel Circle, Reti Stand, Surajpol, Kalaji Goraji, Gulab Bagh.
