St. Simons Island is the largest of the Golden Isles, with a permanent population of 12,743 as of the 2010 census. Reachable via the F. J. Torras Causeway, the Island is a tourist destination for its beaches, water sports, boating and fishing, golf, nature trails, historical landmarks, shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
The new causeway was an immediate sensation for all of Glynn County. On the day that it opened, 5,500 cars crossed over to St. Simons, and 7,500 people were fed a fish dinner under some live oak trees. There was also a parade on Gloucester St. in Brunswick with floats that celebrated the opening of the causeway.
The hotel began in 1935 as the King and Prince Beach Club, a seaside dance club built by Morgan T. Wynne and Franklin J. Horne. It was noted for its big band entertainment and dancing.
