Hibiscus mutabilis, also known as the Confederate rose, Dixie rosemallow, cotton rose or cotton rosemallow, is a plant long cultivated for its showy flowers. Originally native to southern China , [ 1 ] it is now found on all continents except Antarctica .
It is a member of the American Public Gardens Association, American Horticulture Society Reciprocal Admissions Program, Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce, and Visit Florida [1] and receives about 35,000 visitors annually. [2] The gardens are open to the public during weekday business hours, and on shorter weekend hours.
The cultivar flushes in a chronological blooming pattern throughout its local season, starting in late spring until fall. The long-stemmed rose flowers are long lasting and showy and make excellent cut flowers, though they "blue" badly with age. The rose bush reaches 75 to 200 cm (30 to 79 in) height, and a diameter of 60 to 120 cm (24 to 47 in).
The plant is excellent for use in the garden, in containers, cut flower, hedge or landscape. [2] Buds are a rich, dark pink color. Flowers are bright, pale pink when they first open, and later fade to near white in warmer climates. Flowers come in clusters of five to fifteen, and have a mild, sweet fragrance, with ruffled, slightly cupped petals.
