Cooke died at his residence in Ormeau Road, Belfast, on Sunday, 13 December 1868. A public funeral was voted to him on the motion of Robert Knox, Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore. The first minister was the Rev Francis Close, Rector of Cheltenham and later Dean of Carlisle Cathedral. The Dean Close School was named after him. The Church was opened with an address from the Rev Charles Simeon.
