The Ontario Agricultural College (founded 1873) began awarding a three-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree through the University of Toronto in 1888: a fourth year to the program was added in 1902. [6] Later, the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program in Canada predominantly consists of four-year study in college. [7] [8]
The first batch of students graduated in 2003. 1 July 1999 to 31 Dec. 1999 Professor Ratnajeevan Hoole (Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering) chaired the “informal” Faculty Board that approved the complete syllabus for the faculty. [2] Dr. H.H.J. Kirthisena was the first dean of the faculty and served from 1999 to 2001.
The Faculty has been offering a BSc in Food Science & Nutrition degree since 2001. This degree programme in the combined disciplines is the first of its kind in the Sri Lankan university system. Faculty offers a BSc in Food Production & Technology Management from the academic year 2008–2009.
The degrees awarded by the university are treated as equivalent to degrees awarded by any other Sri Lankan University under the preview of the University Grants Commission. Established in 1972 by amalgamating the four existing universities, it was the only university in Sri Lanka from 1972 until 1978. The university was based at six campuses in Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and Jaffna. The university was dissolved in 1978 and its six campuses became independent universities.
SEUSL offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses that award degrees such as BA, BBA, BSc. in MIT,BCom, BSc and MBA. The university had 2,237 students and 338 employees in 2010. [2] It is the thirteenth largest university in Sri Lanka in student numbers. [2] In 2009/10 the university admitted 836 undergraduates. [3]
The university practices a semester-based system and conducts most of its study programmes in the English medium. Although a bilingual medium (English/Sinhala or English/Tamil) instruction is available in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, the proportion of students who follow study programmes in the Sinhala medium is on the decline.
UWU is the 14th National University in the Sri Lankan State University system and is known as the nation's first all-entrepreneurial institution.
