MOSFET, showing gate (G), body (B), source (S), and drain (D) terminals. The gate is separated from the body by an insulating layer (pink).. The MOSFET (metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor) [1] is a type of insulated-gate field-effect transistor (IGFET) that is fabricated by the controlled oxidation of a semiconductor, typically silicon.
NXP 7030AL - N-channel TrenchMOS logic level FET IRF640 Power Mosfet die. The power MOSFET is the most widely used power semiconductor device in the world. [3] As of 2010, the power MOSFET accounts for 53% of the power transistor market, ahead of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (27%), RF power amplifier (11%) and bipolar junction transistor (9%). [24]
MOSFET analog switches use the MOSFET to pass analog signals when on, and as a high impedance when off. Signals flow in both directions across a MOSFET switch. In this application, the drain and source of a MOSFET exchange places depending on the relative voltages of the source and drain electrodes.
In most circuits, this means pulling an enhancement-mode MOSFET's gate voltage towards its drain voltage turns it on. In a depletion-mode MOSFET, the device is normally on at zero gate–source voltage. Such devices are used as load "resistors" in logic circuits (in depletion-load NMOS logic, for example).
The 2N7000 is an N-channel, enhancement-mode MOSFET used for low-power switching applications. [1] The 2N7000 is a widely available and popular part, often recommended as useful and common components to have around for hobbyist use. [2] Packaged in a TO-92 enclosure, the 2N7000 is rated to withstand 60 volts and can switch 200 millamps.
Many SSRs use optical coupling. The control voltage energizes an internal LED which illuminates and switches on a photo-sensitive diode (photo-voltaic); the diode current turns on a back-to-back thyristor , SCR, or MOSFET to switch the load. The optical coupling allows the control circuit to be electrically isolated from the load.
Analog applications include analog weighting, summing, limiting, and digital-to-analog converters. The NPN BJT (n-type bipolar junction transistor) and nMOS (n-type metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) have greater conductance than their PNP and pMOS relatives, so may be more commonly used for these outputs. Open outputs using PNP ...
The isolated gate-electrode of the MOSFET forms a capacitor (gate capacitor), which must be charged or discharged each time the MOSFET is switched on or off. As a transistor requires a particular gate voltage in order to switch on, the gate capacitor must be charged to at least the required gate voltage for the transistor to be switched on.
