Whispering Pines is located in northern Gila County in the upper valley of the East Verde River, between Washington Park to the north and Beaver Valley to the south. It is 12 miles (19 km) north of Payson. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Whispering Pines CDP has a total area of 0.43 square miles (1.11 km 2), all land. [3]
The Whispering Pines Trail winds through the plantation. This paved trail includes signs that interpret the coniferous forest. The pine plantation is home to many animals that prefer a coniferous habitat. The silence of the pine forest is often broken by the chatter of a red squirrel as it sees visitors.
The state park features boating, waterskiing and fishing on 150-acre (61 ha) Lowndes Lake, primitive and developed campsites, cabins and cottages, seven miles (11 km) of hiking and equestrian trails, visitors center with gymnasium, tennis courts and play fields, picnic area, and an 18-hole disc golf course, Whispering Pines.
Payson is home to several hiking trails—notably the Cypress/Boulders trail system and nearby Mogollon Rim trails (including Horton Creek trail). The Tonto Natural Bridge , the largest known natural bridge in the world, is located just northwest of Payson in Tonto Natural Bridge State Park , a unit of the Arizona State Park system .
