The Inland Waterway or Inland Water Route is a 38-mile-long (61 km) series of rivers and lakes in the U.S. state of Michigan.With only a short portage, it forms a navigable route for small craft connecting Lake Huron and Crooked Lake, across the Northern Michigan region.
Lake Michigan (/ ˈ m ɪ ʃ ɪ ɡ ən / ⓘ MISH-ig-ən) is one of the five Great Lakes of North America.It is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume [5] (1,180 cu mi; 4,900 km 3) and depth (923 ft; 281 m) after Lake Superior and the third-largest by surface area (22,405 sq mi; 58,030 km 2), after Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
The Cheboygan River descends 13 feet (4.0 m) in its 6-mile (9.7 km) length, from 594 feet (181 m) above sea level, the level of Mullett Lake, to Lake Huron at 581 feet (177 m) above sea level. The river and other sections of the Inland Waterway are made accessible by locks maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
Last summer, Lake Michigan was 10 degrees above normal, which resulted in the water taking longer to cool down in the winter. At the start of the year, only 3% of the Great Lakes were covered in ice.

Manitou Passage is a navigable Lake Michigan waterway separating North and South Manitou Island from mainland Michigan. [1] [2] The passage—used by deep-draft lake freighters—is located in Leelanau County and is within the Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve. John F. Kennedy's president yacht S/Y Manitou was named after Manitou Passage. [3]
The waterway connects to Lake Superior at its north and south entries (upper and lower portage entry lighthouses), with sections known as Portage Lake and Torch Lake in between. The primary tributary to Portage Lake is the Sturgeon River. The Keweenaw Waterway in winter, looking west toward the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.
