Franklin County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 155,932. [1] Its county seat is Chambersburg. [2] Franklin County comprises the Chambersburg–Waynesboro, PA metropolitan statistical area, which is also included in the Washington–Baltimore combined statistical area.
Franklin is located in southwestern Cambria County at (40.343073, -78.881873), [4] in the valley of the Little Conemaugh River. The river forms the northwestern boundary of the borough, with East Conemaugh and a small portion of Johnstown on the opposite side.
Fort Franklin was a stockaded fort constructed at the order of Benjamin Franklin in 1756, in response to a series of raids by Native American war parties on Pennsylvania settlements in late 1755, in particular the Great Cove massacre and the Gnadenhütten massacre.
