Molokai Airport is located on the central plains of Molokai. The United States Census Bureau divides the island into three census tracts, Census Tract 317 and Census Tract 318 of Maui County and Census Tract 319 of Kalawao County. Kamakou is located within the 2,774-acre (11.23 km 2; 4.334 sq mi) Molokai Forest Reserve, [3] estimated to contain more than 250 rare native Hawaiian plants, many of which exist only in this part of the world. Olokui is the second highest peak on the island of Molokai, surpassed by only Kamakou. At 4,602 feet (1,403 m), it marks the divide between the Pelekunu and Wailau valleys. It is part of the extinct East Molokai shield volcano , which comprises the east side of the island. [ 2 ]

Kalaupapa is located on the Kalaupapa Peninsula at the base of sea cliffs that rise 2,000 feet (610 m) above the Pacific Ocean. In the 1870s a community to support the leper colony was established here. The legislature required people with severe cases to be quarantined on the island in the hope of preventing contagion. [6]
