The M20 is a motorway in Kent, England. It follows on from the A20 at Swanley, meeting the M25, and continuing on to Folkestone, providing a link to the Channel Tunnel and the ports at Dover. It is 50.6 miles (81.4 km) long. Although not signposted in England, this road is part of the European route E15.
While traffic using the M2 decreased when the M20 motorway was completed from London to Folkestone in May 1991, [19] traffic heading into North Kent remained, and congestion along the route was increasing, primarily due to heavy goods vehicles blocking the outside lane. [20]
The route continues north of the M20 and terminates at a roundabout on the A28 in Kennington. In 2003 the road became part of the South Coast trunk road, a status previously held by the A259 from Brenzett to Folkestone. M20 Junction 10A (Sevington Interchange) opened in late 2019 and includes a spur of the A2070. [5]
North of Folkestone the M20 becomes a dual carriageway and enters the Roundhill Tunnel before crossing over and dropping down into Dover. This part of the A20 was completed in 1993 as a project included in the Parliamentary Bill for the Channel Tunnel. [ 6 ]
The M20 runs between the M25 and Folkestone, with a section of the A20 dual carriageway making up the last few miles to Dover. Effectively the motorway has carried nearly all cross channel traffic to and from the Port of Dover and the Channel Tunnel since the late 1990s.
This route has always been of importance as a connection between London and sea trade routes to Continental Europe. It was originally known as the Dover Road. [1] The M2 motorway has replaced part of the A2 as the strategic route. Unlike the other single digit A-roads in Great Britain, the A2 does not form a zone boundary.
The A259 is a road on the south coast of England passing through Hampshire, West Sussex, East Sussex, and Kent, and is the longest Zone 2 A road in Great Britain. The main part of the road connects Brighton, Peacehaven, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, and Folkestone.
The European route E15 is part of the United Nations international E-road network. It is a north–south "reference road", running from Inverness , Scotland south through England and France to Algeciras , Spain . [ 1 ]
