In December 1950, the Central Advisory Committee for Railways approved the plan for re-organizing Indian Railways into six regional zones which were divided subsequently to create newer zones. As of 2024, there are 17 operational zones of Indian Railways. [13] The zones are headed by a General manager and are further sub-divided into divisions.

On 29 December 2010, Metro Railway, Kolkata, became the 17th zone of the Indian Railways, completely owned and funded by the Ministry of Railways. It is the only metro system in the country to be controlled by Indian Railways. Around 300 daily train trips carry more than 700,000 passengers.

First Railway service in erstwhile Travancore was started on 1904 November 26. It was Kollam-Sengottai Metre-gauge railway. Kollam district has the highest number of operational railway stations (25) in Kerala, while Palakkad district has the highest number of stations (28). Shoranur Junction(SRR) is the largest railway station in the state. [3]
