The large-journal connecting rods were thicker (heavier) and used 3 ⁄ 8 in (9.5 mm) diameter cap-bolts to replace the small-journal's 11/32. 1968 blocks were made in 2-bolt and 4-bolt versions with the 4-bolt center-three main caps each fastened by two additional bolts which were supported by the addition of thicker crankcase main-web bulkheads.

It had 2-bolt main bearing caps in 1969, but went to a block similar to the Ram Air IV's in 1969 that was drilled for 4-bolt main bearing caps (but used a cast crank and cast rods). In 1970 the casting number #9799914 Ram Air 400 4-bolt main block also used the 4-bolt main caps on Ram Air applications.
The LT-1 is a Chevrolet small-block engine produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors between 1970 and 1972. It is regarded today as one of the greatest of the Chevrolet small-blocks, an engine that has been in production since 1955.
