In October 1991 a five-year FMTV contract was awarded to Stewart & Stevenson. The initial contract order total was expected to be 20,000 vehicles. This was reduced to 10,843 vehicles, and valued at US$1.2 billion. Some options were added, raising the total to 11,197 vehicles over seven contract years.
