The Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist–Leninist), abbreviated CPGB-ML, is an anti-revisionist Marxist–Leninist communist party in the United Kingdom, active in England, Scotland, and Wales. The CPGB-ML was founded by Harpal Brar after a split from the Socialist Labour Party (SLP) on 3 July 2004.
The party was formed in 1968 by Reg Birch as a Maoist, anti-revisionist breakaway from the Communist Party of Great Britain, siding with the Communist Party of China in the Sino-Soviet split. [3] From 1979 onwards the CPB-ML sided with Enver Hoxha in the Sino-Albanian split. [2]
Harpal Brar (5 October 1939 – 25 January 2025) was an Indian communist, politician, writer and businessman, based in the United Kingdom. He was the founder and chairman of the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist–Leninist), a role from which he stood down in 2018.
The Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) was the largest communist organisation in Britain and was founded in 1920 through a merger of several smaller Marxist groups. When many of them left the SLP in 2004, they founded the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist–Leninist). The CPGB-ML was the founder of the broad electoral front of the Workers Party, together with George Galloway in 2019. The organisations formally separated, however in 2021.
