Waldbaum's operated full-service traditional supermarkets with varying footprints and store models and its popular marquee in certain aisles along with good food and reliable service. At its peak in the 1980s, it was the 12th largest supermarket chain in the United States and had 140 stores throughout the New York metropolitan area. [ 3 ]

In 1904 Joseph Waldbaum started a shop in Brooklyn. From this one store he expanded and created the Waldbaum's Supermarket Chain, which reached its zenith of 160 stores before being bought by The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in 1986.
Many Waldbaum's were still in operation when the company started liquidation, mainly in the Long Island area. [75] Farmer Jack was a 79-store supermarket chain based in Detroit; it was purchased by A&P in 1989. Farmer Jack started in 1924; in the mid-1950s its name was changed to Borman's.
