Santa Barbara (Spanish: Santa Bárbara, meaning ' Saint Barbara ') is a coastal city in Santa Barbara County, California, of which it is also the county seat.Situated on a south-facing section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States excepting Alaska, the city lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
The property spans 70 acres (280,000 m 2) of undeveloped ocean-front land, and represents the largest area of coastal open space within the city limits of Santa Barbara. Although the official name of this area is the Douglas Family Preserve (see below), residents of Santa Barbara regularly refer to it by its older name, the Wilcox Property .
The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center, formerly known as the "Ty Warner Sea Center", is an off-site facility owned and operated by the Museum of Natural History and is located on Santa Barbara’s historic Stearns Wharf. It originally opened in 1986 and was expanded and renovated in 2005.
