Van Zandt County is commonly known as the Free State of Van Zandt. The title was particularly prevalent through the Reconstruction Era, but is still in use today.Many versions of the county's history may account for this moniker, and historians, even within the county and throughout its existence, do not agree how exactly it became known as the Free State.
There was a church, a cemetery, a seasonal industry, and several scattered houses here in 1936. It then received electricity in 1944. The population was reduced by half in the late 1960s and went up to 125 from the early 1970s through 2000. A 1984 county highway map showed a church and some businesses in Martin's Mill. [2]

Farm to Market Road 47 (FM 47) is located in Rains and Van Zandt counties. It runs from SH 198 to US 69 in Point. FM 47 was designated on April 29, 1942, from US 80 in Wills Point north 5.0 miles (8.0 km) to Clifton. On January 11, 1945, FM 47 was extended south to Scott.
