West Liberty is located in central Morgan County at (37.916320, -83.261386 It is within the state's eastern region foothills, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Cave Run Lake and Daniel Boone National Forest and the same distance west of the upstream end of Paintsville Lake .
The first white settler in the county was Daniel Williams, a traveling preacher from Virginia who built the first permanent home in the vicinity several miles south of present-day West Liberty. During the Civil War, Morgan County was firmly pro-confederate in sentiment, donating hundreds of men to the 5th KY Infantry (CSA).

The Christian Church of West Liberty, at 304 Prestonsburg St. in West Liberty in Morgan County, Kentucky, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Site of church, in May 2014. The church was destroyed in a tornado of March 2, 2012. [1] A newly constructed West Liberty Christian Church was dedicated on April 9, 2016. [2]

The Morgan County Courthouse in West Liberty, Kentucky was built in 1907 and is the county courthouse of Morgan County, Kentucky. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. [1] It is built of large precast concrete blocks and its design includes octagonal corner towers. [2] It is the fourth Morgan County courthouse.
