Elena Gilbert is a fictional character and protagonist from the novel series The Vampire Diaries. In the television series adaptation , set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, she is portrayed by Nina Dobrev .

Kelly walks out ashamed and Matt goes with her while Damon does not look bothered. Elena offers to drive Caroline home while Frederick spies the Salvatore house from afar. At the Gilbert house, Jeremy and Anna make sandwiches while Jeremy cuts his hand in purpose since he is suspecting Anna to be a vampire.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) are still at the Gilbert's lake house where Elena reads Jonathan's new journal she and Stefan found in the secret room of the house. Stefan is still mad at her for her decision to sacrifice herself to save her family and friends.
Since the new vampires will smell the injured Matt's blood (and probably attack) he and Jeremy try to escape. Although they are attacked, Elena intervenes and they reach the lake house. The next day, Elena scolds Damon for using innocent people; the vampires (controlled by Klaus) will return soon and Damon says, "Jeremy needs to finish the job."
Stefan tells Elena that the Salvatore family crest on his ring dates to the Italian Renaissance. In the novels, Stefan and Damon come from 15th century Florence. The Salvatore house is referred to as a boarding house in this episode, but is not run by the brothers' "uncle" but by an old woman called Mrs. Flowers, who is also a witch.
Matt moves into her house and Elena decides to stay in the Salvatore House for safety. Stefan then decides to leave, unable to stay in the same house as Elena. It is eventually revealed that Shane and Hayley are working together to break the sire bond with Klaus's hybrids. Caroline and Stefan begin to believe that Elena is sired to Damon.
