Already an established artist, Piper began designing for stained glass in the 1950s, working in partnership with Patrick Reyntiens , who manufactured the large majority of Piper's realised designs over a period of 30 years.

In the early 1880s, Mielatz moved to New York City, where he created his first etching in 1883. On February 25, 1903, Mielatz married Mary Stuart McKinney.
