The original Southville station, formerly located 0.7 miles (1.1 km) to the west, is now a private residence. The building was moved from its location south of the tracks in 1890. A station at Southborough (later called Southville) was in use by 1838. [3] The station was rebuilt in 1852, and a new station at Cordaville was added. [4]
The property is over 27 acres (11 ha) in size, ringed by public roadways that are relatively sparsely developed. Its largest feature is an oval racetrack occupying the southern portion of the grounds; the midway is located adjacent to the northern part of the track, while the permanent exhibition halls are in the northeast part of the property.
In 1980, the track was expanded to a 0.275 mi (0.443 km) oval. [5] Midgets and modifieds dominated racing at Seekonk Speedway, until the predecessors to the late models were introduced. The track has not only hosted stock car racing, however. The track has been flooded at least once for boat races to take place within its walls. [6]
