The term Cavalier (/ ˌ k æ v ə ˈ l ɪər /) was first used by Roundheads as a term of abuse for the wealthier royalist supporters of Charles I of England and his son Charles II during the English Civil War, the Interregnum, and the Restoration (1642 – c. 1679). It was later adopted by the Royalists themselves.
During the war and for a time afterwards, Roundhead was a term of derision, [7] and in the New Model Army it was a punishable offence to call a fellow soldier a Roundhead. [8] This contrasted with Cavalier , a word used to describe supporters of the Royalist cause, but which also started out as a pejorative term.
