This is a list of plantation great houses in Jamaica.These houses were built in the 18th and 19th centuries when sugar cane made Jamaica the wealthiest colony in the West Indies. [1] Sugar plantations in the Caribbean were worked by enslaved African people [ 2 ] until the aboltion of slavery in 1833.
Annually, more than 150 ships arrived in Montego Bay bringing slaves and supplies, and taking sugar. Commerce developed as wealthy merchants and planters erected many elaborate town houses. In 1773, Montego Bay had the only newspaper outside of Kingston - The Cornwall Chronicle. Fire, in 1795 and again in 1811, destroyed much of Montego Bay.
In the 1960s John Rollins who had been visiting Jamaica purchased a seven thousand acre sugar plantation Rose Hall near Montego Bay from Francis Kerr-Jarrett. This was developed into a resort and residential development. Part of the facilities was the restoration of the ruined plantation great house as a museum. [3] [4]
