The station dropped Texas State Network in favor of RKO Radio. Its album-leaning Top 40 formula would later upgrade its format to CHR. At the time, KKQV was the dominant CHR station in Wichita Falls, despite Wichita Falls having 2 Top 40 stations, with the other being KNIN. KKQV then acquired 1290 AM KTRN from Sammons-Ruff Communications in 1980.
