San José Mineta International Airport (IATA: SJC, ICAO: KSJC, FAA LID: SJC)—officially Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport [5] —is a city-owned public airport in San Jose, California. Located 3 mi (4.8 km) northwest of Downtown San Jose, the airport serves both the city and the Santa Clara Valley region of the greater Bay Area.
The airport is located in Burbank, and serves the heavily populated areas of northern Los Angeles County. It is the closest airport to the central and northeastern parts of L.A. (including Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles ), Glendale , Pasadena , the San Fernando Valley , the Santa Clarita Valley , and the western San Gabriel Valley .
Originally named Orange County Airport, the Orange County Board of Supervisors renamed the airport in 1979 in honor of actor John Wayne, who lived in neighboring Newport Beach and died that year. A statue of John Wayne was installed at the airline terminal in 1982. [7] John Wayne Airport is the sole commercial airport in Orange County.
Sun Country was incorporated on 2 July 1982. [4] It received its certificate of public necessity and convenience from the Civil Aeronautics Board on January 17, 1983. [5] The company began offering charter service and the first revenue flight was on January 20, 1983 from Sioux Falls to Las Vegas, using a Boeing 727 aircraft leased from Air Florida.
It added Orange County (SNA) to San Jose (SJC) and Oakland (OAK) flights around the beginning of 1968. By May 1968, the airline was operating 92 flights per week from SNA to SFO, primarily using Douglas DC-9-10 twin jets, as well as 50 flights a week from SNA to SJC, with most continuing on to OAK.
