By 1885, Carrollton had flour mills, cotton gins, two churches, a school, and a population of 150. The St. Louis Southwestern Railway (the "Cotton Belt") crossed the Katy in 1888, and the town became a shipping center for livestock, cotton, cotton seed, and grain, helping the town surpass Trinity Mills to the north.
Janet Karvonen was born and raised in New York Mills, Minnesota, where she became a pioneer for girls basketball in Minnesota. Karvonen scored over 3,000 points in her high school career and led New York Mills to state championships in 1977, 1978, and 1979 and a third-place finish in 1980.

New York Mills is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 3,327 at the 2010 census. The village of New York Mills is partly in the town of Whitestown and partly in the town of New Hartford. It is a western suburb of the city of Utica.
Grover Cleveland High School was established in 1897; it was renamed Johnson Senior High School in 1911. By 1906, the Saint Paul Public Schools district had around 27,940 students attending it. Eight years later in 1914, the Saint Paul city government took control of all educational matters.
