The eastern theater was the venue for several major campaigns launched by the Union Army of the Potomac to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia; many of these were frustrated by the Army of Northern Virginia, a division of the Confederate States Army, commanded by General Robert E. Lee.
The original included the 1854 Leigh Street Baptist Church by architects Samuel Sloan with cast iron stairs by Asa Snyder [1] and the 1938 Art Deco style East End Theater by Henry Carl Messerschmidt (1891-1994). [3] Venable Street Baptist Church built by T. Wiley Davis in the 1880s was part of the added area.
The Loew's Theatre Corporation's design was created by renowned New York architect John Eberson and was influenced by both Spanish and Moorish baroque architecture. Architectural historian Calder Loth states: "Loew's was considered the most up-to-date theater in the South when it opened on April 9, 1928". [3]
In 1986, Theatre IV purchased and renovated the historic November Theatre (formerly the Empire), one of Richmond's two Broadway style houses. This historic theater opened in 1911 for stock and vaudeville performances. In 1915 it changed its name from the Empire to the Strand and continued under that name until damaged by fire in 1927.
