The Durrells (known in North America as The Durrells in Corfu) is a British comedy-drama television series loosely based on Gerald Durrell's three autobiographical books about his family's four years (1935–1939) on the Greek island of Corfu. [1] It aired on ITV from 3 April 2016 to 12 May 2019. [2]
In 1930, Stephanides married Mary Alexander, the granddaughter of a former British consul in Corfu. [1] The couple had one child, Alexia Stephanides-Mercouri (1931–2018). [1] [2] [15] Alexia was a close friend of Gerald Durrell in Corfu, and Stephanides hoped that the two would marry one day, but the outbreak of World War II ruined these plans.
The son of Samuel Amos Durrell (1851–1914), [4] an official in the British Army's Ordnance Department in Bengal, and his second wife, Dora Maria Johnstone (1862–1943). Lawrence Samuel was a civil engineer working mainly on railway and construction projects in north-east India, eventually founding his own company of Durrell & Co. in Jamshedpur .

The show tells the story of the extravagant Durrell family who, tired of the rainy and unhealthy English climate, move to the sun-drenched Greek island of Corfu. The family consists of Gerry (young naturalist), his widowed mother (excellent cook), his eldest brother Larry (starting writer), another brother Leslie (mad about guns and boats) and sister Margo (who suffers from acne).
