The geology of Virginia began to form at least 1.8 billion years ago. The oldest rocks in the state were metamorphosed during the Grenville orogeny , a mountain-building event beginning 1.2 billion years ago in the Proterozoic , which obscured older rocks.
W.N. Flynt Granite Co., in Monson, Massachusetts, a granite quarry that opened in 1809 and operated until 1935. By 1888, the company employed over 200 workers, and produced about 30,000 tons of granite per year. Quincy Quarries Reservation, in Quincy, Massachusetts, producer of granite from 1826 to 1963, including for the Bunker Hill Monument.
The boulders form natural tidal pools, tunnels, arches, and scenic grottoes that are open to the sea. [2] The largest boulders are about 40 feet (12 m) long. Since 1990, the area has been a BVI National Park [3] as are the adjacent bays, [4] and the area is a major tourist attraction, with swimming and snorkeling being the main attractions.
Old Rag Mountain is underlain by Old Rag Granite, named for its ubiquitous exposure on the mountain, formed during the Grenville Orogeny about a billion years ago. About 400 million years after the Grenville orogeny during the Catoctin Formation, deposition of basaltic magma occurred during the formation of the Iapetus Ocean, forming a layer of greenstone over the granite.
Granite (/ ˈ ɡ r æ n ɪ t / GRAN-it) is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock composed mostly of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. It forms from magma with a high content of silica and alkali metal oxides that slowly cools and solidifies underground.
The main rock forming the batholith is granite, which formed when magma cooled slowly, covered by 2–3,000 metres of slate and sandstone. The slow cooling gave time for crystals to form in the granite which are large enough to see with the naked eye, giving it a granular appearance. These grains are mainly of quartz, feldspar and biotite.
Virginia Beach, officially the City of Virginia Beach, is the most populous city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. The population was 459,470 at the 2020 census . [ 2 ] Located on the southeastern coast of Virginia, it is the sixth-most populous city in the Mid-Atlantic and the 42nd-most populous city in the U.S .
Headlands and bays form on discordant coastlines, where bands of rock of alternating resistance run perpendicular to the coast. Bays form when weak (less resistant) rocks (such as sands and clays ) are eroded, leaving bands of stronger (more resistant) rocks (such as chalk , limestone , and granite ) forming a headland, or peninsula .
